Important to Montecastelli are our animals. The Schmidt's are originally from Bremen,
hometown to the Brementown Musicians, a fairy tale including a donkey, a dog, a
cat and a rooster. Well we have
made our dream come true and recreated the Brementown Musicians at
Montecastelli: 3 donkeys, two horses, 10 pigs, about 20 hens, chicken roosters
and guinea fowl, 3 cats and a dog are our current lineup of musicians at
Montecastelli and close the circle of a balanced live between men, plants and
animals. Each animal contributes
in an important way to the needs of others , the cultivation of our crops and
gets plernty to eat in return.
Donkeys and horses substitute the lawnmower in most parts, and produce
the necessary manure, so do the chicken, and they lay eggs, dogs and cats
either catch or chase away other species that would be a danger to our crops,
and pigs help turn the mature manure short before applying it to our soils or
olive trees.
