PRIMO OLIO HARVEST 2023
The 2023 olive harvest was a very special one. Essentially weather was not cooperating. No rain when rain was needed during the winter months, rainstorms in early summer when no rain would have been a lot better for a successful fruit set. Followed by an immediately hot summer. As a result, most Tuscan farmers did not harvest the few olives on their trees.
At the Montecastelli farm things went a little different. The year prior we produced copious amount of fertilizer from our own pruning’s, horse manure and olive mash. We applied this gorgeous and powerful ‘matter of life’ just at the right time in April, short before a small rainstorm. And while it looked during the summer not very promising on our farm either, as we were getter closer to October and harvest time, I realized that we were spared from the loss of olives due to the hot summer.
On October 17th we started to harvest beautifully matured, albeit green frantoio olives, and made one of our best oils ever.
The harvest process was very difficult due to the still ongoing hot temperatures, and required immediate cooling and careful handling of all harvested olives, and a very quick process at low temperatures in the olive mill. Yes, also we harvested only about 60% of a regular harvest, but still way more successful than our fellow farmers in most of Europe.
As this constituted a very special crop, and coincided with our 30th anniversary of harvesting olives at the Montecastelli farm we opted for a very traditional non filtered packaging. Wrapped in gold foil in order to avoid any UV damage on this special liquid gold, we are proud presenting our top selection Extra Virgin, organic certified Tuscan high altitude olive oil to you!

Possible benefits and contraindications
Olive oil is an excellent source of molecules with antioxidant activity, in particular phenolic compounds that have been associated with several possible health benefits. Scientific studies suggest that olive oil could help fight cardiovascular problems by influencing blood lipid levels and LDL oxidation, endothelial function, inflammation, coagulation, plasma antioxidant capacity and the response to glucose and insulin. Furthermore, it seems that olive oil helps prevent some forms of cancer (particularly those affecting the digestive system), that it exerts an antibacterial action and that it can be useful in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, as a laxative and, applied to the skin, as an effective emollient in cases of dermatitis.
This is an agricultural product, extracted on site within 8 hours of harvesting in our Alfa Laval mill with a very specific provenance and exclusively produced with our farm grown organic certified olives by the CCPB, and not mixed with olives from other origins. This results in a higher than average presence of polyphenols, offers a fresh and spicy taste with a picante, generally bitter finish.
This super-food consumed alone is more like a medicine, but consumed together with other foods gives great flavor to all dishes, including desserts. The high presence of polyphenols also gives a long life to this product, well beyond the 18 months suggested by law on the label. Furthermore, this oil is also suitable for frying, very digestible, being extracted in a very clean way (and not refined), thus having a high smoke point (207 degrees Celsius, 405 F). In the process it maintains a high stability thanks to the low oleic acid content.
